There are many breaches of social law behind the gates of thel ports, but the International Transport workers' Federation (ITF) ensures the rights of the seafarers.

The M/V "ERATO", flying Bahamas flag, owned by DIANA SHIPPING - a Greek company with 39 vessels and chartered by CARGRILL - did not comply with the MLC 2006. 10 Filipinos seafarers were underpaid and wages were sometimes paid after 2 or 3 months ! Around $ 32,000 were due to them.

It seems to be the first time in Brest that deficiences under the provisions of the MLC (regarding the wages) were identified by the Port State Control. The Port State Control just applied the MLC 2006, saying that "all wages shall be paid at NO GREATER than monthly intervals".

The M/V "ERATO" is sailing to USA.

MOR GLAZ reminds that on the docks of Brest or elsewhere including worldwide, if all actors in ports (administrative, trade unions, associations, etc. ..) were associated, all seafarers, could get a better treeatment from these "pseudo-shipowners."
