Letter sent by mail this very day to the seamen's employer of the cargo " CAPTAIN
STAREV "stuck in Brest since November 2008.
Sir,
You have almost abandoned
alongside the quay in the port of Brest (France) 9 of your seamen on board the
cargo " CAPTAIN STAREV ", boat belonging to you.
I
used to be a seaman and for 38 years I was lucky not to have sailed with a shipowner
like you.
I am the spokeman of
the Seamen's Trade Union (CGT Marins) for western France and President of the
organization MOR GLAZ (which supports your crew in the hardship they are enduring
because of your negligence and your dereliction of duty as an employer). In the
maritime world you are too many to have such behaviours. Shipowners or managers
(who have become too numerous) like you tarnish the image of International Maritime
Transport.
You spread a negative
image which injures shipowners, seamen and as well as your complete network in
general.
You create social dumping
and take advantage of poverty to make money in an activity where you shouldn't
be any longer.
You create unfair
and harmful competition which destabilizes the market and the prices of freight
by the ton.
Your behaviour disorganizes
this trade. Making money is not sufficient for you; you also exploit seamen
you are responsible of. The International Maritime Organization
should prevent you and the people of your sort, from persisting and carrying on
in the shipowners or managers'trade, activity which should be none of your business
anymore.
We will continue to
conduct actions as long as all overdue wages are not sorted out. We will carry
on notifying French authorites, along with the International Federal
Trade Union of Transports, of your shameful behaviour, and this as long
as necessary.
